That's two differents things.
You should "hide" your window, and write an "system tray" support in
your app.
You should read some apps sources to know how.
- Gaim, Rhythmbox (in C)
- Liferea (in Perl)
- Sancho (in Java)
- update-notifier (in Python)
- Muine, Beagle (in C#)
