Since you bring it up... The notification area icon does not have any options that aren't available by clicking the little arrow in the upper-right corner of the classic theme. I assume other themes have a similar UI element. In addition, each of those menu items is exposed as an actionable item in Do (try typing "donate", for example). So if you don't particularly like that icon, you don't lose anything by disabling it.
