Where did you get that impression from? The original messages can be any native characters, as long as its in a Latin script (since that is what most English users will be able to read) and valid UTF-8. In fact, the original message *should* use native Latin characters and native spelling, unless the location has an established and different name in English (as in København/Copenhagen or München/Munich).
