I can see the problem. But, on the other hand, if there is a firewall in
place, it is to enforce a policy set by the sysadmins of that network.
Is providing workarounds so people can hack on GNOME using resources
they probably shouldn't be using for that job within our remit?

Mind you, I wouldn't lose that much sleep over it, and if there is a
reasonable enough demand for it, and a reasonable enough argument for it
I suppose it could be considered, but this is the first request I've
seen of this kind.
