Yeah.. seems I only check for .tar.gz
It should do it in the following order:
.tar.gz
.tar.xz
.tar.bz2
But then not hardcoded except for preferring .tar.gz. If you want to patch, see
sysadmin-bin module. Otherwise I will (search for LATEST-IS to find the code).
