There's a gnome-shell extension on extensions.gnome.org that seems abandoned
and the original author does not react to PRs on github.
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/948/rss-feed/ - there are a few people
that commented for updates and the github project has a few PRs fixing those
issues. I'd be willing to fork. I am already maintaining an extension there so
I know the ropes
