As above, Firefox and Google Chrome are marking all recent source archives as
malware and by default stopping downloads.

I started a bug report here for Firefox but as Google Chrome is doing the same
there does seem to be a new file in the archive somewhere between version 3.20
and 3.38 that is being detected as malware.

It's possible/probable that real time antivirus heuristics are doing the same,
although only VirusTotal antivirus makes a detection (which is mostly signature
based.)

This is files downloaded from https://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/gedit/ .
It doesn't seem to happen when downloaded from
htps://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gedit/ , are these files identical?
