I have had some luck with making sure that XDG_DATA_DIRS is set to all the "share" directories in, gnome, kde, etc., and that XDG_DATA_HOME is unset (it will default to the users home directory then).

After setting this all the Kde apps and Gnome apps show up on the Gnome menus. It's pretty cool but makes the menus huge.

On my system:
> echo $XDG_DATA_DIRS
/usr/local/gnome-unstable/share:/drives/sg3/kde/kde3/share:/usr/share:/usr/local/share
> echo $XDG_DATA_HOME
