Here's what the GNU Coding Standards recommend: http://www.mirror5.com/prep/standards_18.html FWIW, Sun has a similar (but more rigorous) command line standard called CLIP, which is closely aligned with IEEE Std. 1003.1-2001 (SUSv3). I don't think either of those are (freely) available to read online, though.
