Yes, I could, and I will.  However, I fail to see any hardware reason for
the difference in behaviour between the two systems; their behaviour was
identical under Gnome 2.20!  The only thing that has changed is that  both
systems have been upgraded (gradually) to Gnome 2.22.

I'll try switching keyboards but I don't expect any change as a result of
it.
