I'm also a starter but I think that if you want a toolkit that gives you
more control over the appearance  you should take a look at clutter [1].
There are other flexible toolkits around but this is one of the best ones
IMHO. GTK+ is great to create GUIS and for sure it's easier to use. But I
found it harder to customize widgets.
