I've tried that as well but didn't fare any better: the display background

I had assumed that it was related to the same errors I had seen from the Xephyr
approach. Messages in the .xsession-errors file seems to bear that out:

Yes, they're all there. That's where I got to wondering if there was something
specific about Fedora where I'd have to disable something that defaults to
enabled, that sort of thing.
