I had similar problems, but on Fedora 7. My solution, albeit a drastic one, was to switch to Debian Lenny. pilot-link works consistently for me now. I've not tried any of the other interfaces yet, but I bet they work too, since most of them use pilot-link under the covers AFAIK.
