Title: GNOME, and Living a Happy Life

Introduction:

Behdad is an Iranian who grew up loving programming and typography.

In high school, he was introduced to data structures and algorithms, and
after a couple years of studying these concepts, he ended up pursuing a
computer engineering Bachelor of Science program at Sharif University of
Technology in Tehran. It was around this time that he learned about the true
way of Unix as well as Free Software, GNU, and GNOME projects; an event that
eventually formed the basis for his career.

In the years since, he finished his Master of Science degree in computer
science at the University of Toronto and joined Red Hat in the Toronto
office. At the same time he raised to from becoming a GNOME developer, to
maintainer of multiple modules, to a director, and, since last year, the
president of GNOME Foundation.

Behdad enjoys traveling and talking about GNOME, and meeting with other
GNOME contributors. Later this year he will go back to school as a
part-time Master of Business Administration student, to learn skills needed
to expand GNOME in the global Destkop software industry.

In this lecture Behdad will first talk about his experience as an Iranian
interacting with the Free Software world in general, and GNOME in
particular. In the second part of the talk he will focus on how GNOME has
opened a window of opportunity for young computer science students as an
alternative career path that can offer a more rewarding and fun work
experience as well as a truly satisfactory sense of giving and happiness.

When not attending to GNOME, Behdad enjoys skydiving, skiing, running,
hiking, cycling, ice-skating, mount climbing, as well as cooking, dining,
drinking, painting, and listening to really old music. He drinks his coffee
dark and bitter, and collects red hats and fedoras.
