This is an idea I've had kicking around for quite a while but hadn't (until now) worked up into presentable form.
If you've got a lot of shell in your autoconfery sh-mode has good features for editing it. This "autoconf" flavour is a relatively modest departure from plain bourne shell, adjusting details like the imenu pattern and the "test" skeleton.
