FYI, i'm ignoring these guys and as well mails from freepatents.org i say no to software patents and fortunately living in Europe i don't have to worry about anything at all. do you know about them? from the perspective of a country crippled by software patents enforcement, do you think this is a good initiative? are the testimonials (among them Eben Moglen) for real? in any case i find it annoying that they keep contacting us, i really have no interest in loosing my time dealing with patent nonsense. - ----- Forwarded message from [email protected] ----- Date: Mon, 5 Jul 2010 11:33:25 -0400 From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Open Invention Network X-Mailer: Lotus Notes Release 7.0.2 September 26, 2006 Hello Denis, It has been awhile since I first wrote to you regarding the possibility of dyne:bolic joining Open Invention Network (OIN) and, as I haven't heard back, I'm afraid that my note never reached you or I was not very clear about what OIN does. My sense is that I wasn't very clear so I'm going to take another stab at trying to interest you in joining us. First of all, our objective is to ensure that Open Source and Linux stay open and free. One of the obstacles to this is the risk of patent issues that could threaten and dampen the continued growth of Linux. To avoid or minimize the risks of these issues OIN has become a collaborative group that enables innovation by acquiring and licensing patents as well as defending the Linux ecosystem. As an enabler, we acquire patents and make them available on a royalty-free basis to anyone who joins OIN. This removes patents related to the Linux ecosystem from those who are opposed to Linux and gives OIN licensees free access. There is no cost to join nor any need to have patents. Regardless, by joining, you receive free access to OIN's broad portfolio (300+ patents and applications) as well as the Linux System patents of the others who join OIN. Our objective as a defender of the Linux ecosystem is to work with those in the community to neutralize all related patent threats to Linux. One of the ways we do this is to focus on how patents are issued and retained. With help from the Software Freedom Law Center and the Linux Foundation we created the Linux Defenders Program (http://www.linuxdefenders.org) where we invest in new innovation by supporting defensive publications, deepening analysis around the validity of patents and even re-examination of existing patents. With Linux Defenders we are making it more difficult to obtain and retain software patents. Continuing our defensive role, we remain vigilant for patent threats to the community and work in close collaboration with our community to neutralize them. Attached are two testimonials that describe our success in protecting the community from an attempt to attack it. In this action we acquired 22 patents, related to Linux, and took them away from patent trolls. Many companies/organizations benefit from OIN licensee status today and I've attached our current roster for your perusal. Also attached is a press release from one of our more recent licensees wherein they speak to their reasons for joining...hopefully it will strike a chord with you. I thank you for your time and hope you will be interested in having dyne:bolic join us. I would be pleased to speak with you via phone or email about this OIN opportunity.
