Look up his posting history in this group. If you entertain the notion
that he is not a troll in the Usenet sense, he would certainly appear so

The problem is though I really want to understand this,
and to see if it's really as reasonable as is said. And

The short answer is you can't. -- "Trolling" is asking just about any
question that might raise an issue implying disagreement with someone
else's fervently held belief.
Either ask your question and ignore the ad hominem attacks or go
buy a dog for a friend. Newsgroups aren't the proper forum for
polite equivocation.
Most accusations of "trolling" come from those persons most ignorant of
the subject under discussion. These persons are easily identified from
their lack of reference to *verifiable* facts and resulting conclusions
drawn therefrom.
