This is a lie, Stallman *never* even *remotely* tried to rename the piece of software that can be obtained at http://www.kernel.org/ (which is Linux). Stallman created a project to achieve a completely Free Software operating system, called GNU, running with the kernel HURD. HURD never got much success, and when Linux came up, it proved to be a more developed (even if of another kind entirely) kernel. What he asks is for people to not call the whole operating system as Linux, which is a common mistake as 99.999% of the time people are talking about a GNU variant to which was added the Linux kernel. Hence he sometimes uses GNU+Linux. Rui -- Kallisti!
