It seems that many (most?) Free software developers do not get paid
money for their work, so how do they earn money? Work on a non-
software job of some sort? Or is that wrong, and many do get paid for
it?

So then the pay would come from free software companies?
The pay comes from contributions to the Free Software Foundation.
Just ask Richard Stallman. He travels the world preaching the
socialist gospel of the GPL and whilst doing so, grows fat and
happy sampling the world's culinary delights. (Socialist fervor
ends prior to the consumption of black beans and rice).
