But they didn't provide such top level domain names (commonly called TLDs) for cities. In 2009 the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) plans to fill this lacuna by issuing city TLDs for the first time. The Connecting.nyc presentation will describe the origin of a grassroots New York City effort to acquire the .nyc TLD and how it plans to be at the front of the line for city TLDs alongside .paris and .berlin. Thomas Lowenhaupt, founding director of Connecting.nyc Inc, a New York not-for-profit created to acquire and develop the .nyc TLD, will describe the many opportunities .nyc will provide for small businesses, community organizations, issue identification, civic discussion, and more. More info: <http://connectingnyc.org>http://connectingnyc.org About Tom Lowenhaupt: Thomas Lowenhaupt has served in technology policy and development positions for 30 years. From 1992-2006 he was a member of New York City's Queens Community Board 3 where he introduced an Internet Empowerment Resolution calling for the acquisition of the .nyc TLD. In April 2007 he formed Connection.nyc Inc. to acquire and a TLD for New York City's residents and their organizations. Thomas received a BA in government studies from Queens College (CUNY) and a masters from NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program.
