mere aggregation

While you would like to characterize the question as being one of
mere aggregation (because you would like the GPL to not affect a
combined work), that is incorrect, not least because the OP is not doing any aggregation with GPLed code at all.

Perhaps the definitions of "mere aggregation" and "combined work"
can be compared and contrasted. It sounds like blind men are
describing an elephant. When describing a legal document,
definitions are of great importance.

The OP is writing an application which interoperates with a database schema created by a GPLed program. While, in fact, his application does not need to be released under the GPL, that is because his program contains no GPLed code.
