I've never used the auto beaming mechanism and I don't have
Lilypond installed here, but from a quick look in the code
and property.ly, I think you should take a look at the 
beamAutoBegin and beamAutoEnd properties. 
It seems you could even set then separately for different
note durations. See the files ly/property.ly and 
input/test/auto-beam-override.ly
