What is your version of guile, you'll need 1.3 (1.2 has problems
with gc, which looks a lot like what you're seeing here).

You could try:
  
   lilypond -fscm stille.ly

if you're lucky (the unbound error comes later) you'll get a stille.scm 
that you can run through guile...

Yes, lily.scm is read directly.

Yes, it's setting a lot of them.  But i still don't see why lilypond
wouldn't look in usr/share/lilypond or whatever...
