This is nonsensical input. You've told lily to beam two eighth notes to
themselves, which it has duly tried to do, resulting in zero-length
beams and no tails.
Did you get warnings about spanners having the same start and end
points?
Instead, turn off automatic beaming and specify where you want beams
using square brackets. Where you don't specify beams, you will get
tails.
That is,
\autoBeamOff
g'8 g'8 % no beams
[g'8 g'8] % beamed together
