On the practical side, you can also just forget about royalties. If
    they are voluntary, you

    A. Won't get them, because they are voluntary

Let's please distinguish between "royalties" and voluntary
contributions. There's nothing wrong in asking people to send a
donation.

At present, the only way a person can do that is to mail a check.
Mailing a check is enough fuss that I think few people will do it.

But some day there will be an easy way to send someone a dollar
over the Internet. When that happens, I think these voluntary
donations will become common.

I think musicians (once they get popular enough) will be able
to make a living by asking for donations of one dollar from fans.

PS. Is there an english word for "Urtext"?

I think people use the word "urtext", even in English. But perhaps a
"critical edition" is the same thing--I am not certain.
