I am so happy to see this discussion so early in the development of this
software. You guys are great :-)
I don't see anyone making enough distinction between a music editor and
a music notation processor. There does not seem to be a consensus on
what is desired.
I think that a music editor based on notation rather than those stupid
tracks would be a great thing, but it should be non-wysiwyg because I
hope there are very few composers who create music according to how it
looks on the paper. The velocity should be easy to enter using the
number keys, so that one would not have to have a midi keyboard, and
step entry would be faster than recording, because few (none?) can
accurately enter velocity with a midi keyboard. I have had some ideas
for more efficient data entry for some time.
Just in case: Velocity = 0, ppp, pp, p, mf, f, ff, fff in midi, sort of.
The transformation of the finished masterwork into notation is another
issue. Certainly the velocities must be simplified to fewer dynamic
markings, but I imagine that a music notation processor would be very
useful.
Consider that word processors and text editors are both still around,
and there is a lot less difference between them.
I think that combining the editor and the processor should only happen
after there are two things to combine. Otherwise, IMHO the thing would
satisfy no one and frustrate everyone. :-)
