Have you tried Lilypond (http://www.cs.uu.nl/~hanwen/lilypond/) ?
That is what Denemo is using for its back-end, and it's IMHO better than at
least Cubase's score-editor. It has also arguably the nicest output of all
computer-based (consumer) engines.
