No, I hadn't found the lyricAlignment property.

I know about as much of Scheme as I do of Swahili ... which is to say very
little. However, the way I read the lyricAlignment property in
generic-property.scm is that it sets the default value for lyric alignment
... that is, the alignment of all lyrics. (I'm not at home, so I can't
actually try it to see what it does.) Although this is needed, it has
limitations:
1. Lyrics are aligned to the centre of the note head. Left-aligned lyrics
should be aligned to the left of the note head (or further left) and
right-aligned lyrics should be aligned to the right of the note head (or
further right).
2. It does not cater for lyric by lyric alignment. That is, first lyric of a
phrase left-aligned, last lyric of a phrase right aligned, other lyrics
centred.

This is what my patch attempts to address, so we can set songs like:

          | | | | | | | | | | |
         o o o o o o o o o o o
  ... camped by a bil - a - bong, un - der the shade of ...
... mounted on his thor - ough - bred, down came the troop - ers ...
                                       ^ ^
end of phrase right aligned ----------/ \------start of phrase left
aligned

Mudela code to do this:
lyricRight = \property Lyrics . alignLyric = \right
        (lyrics) ... by a bil -- a -- \lyricRight bong, un -- der ...
               ... his thor -- ough -- \lyricRight bred, down came ...

It's really only an issue for multi-stanza songs. For a single line of
words, having all the lyrics centred under their note is fine.

Please let me know if what I have done really duplicates functionality
already there. I searched for it but couldn't find it. I'm still getting the
hang of how Lilypond hangs together.
