Unfortunately, while most programs that take ABC as input have been so
extended, the standard has not, so it's very difficult to send
multi-voice music to people on other platforms or using ABC with
different programs. Also abc2mtex, which is the only program that
gives direct access to a real typesetting system, has not been so
extended.

The 2 reasons I'm using ABC for the music I publish, although I would
prefer a more full-featured system are:

It's easier to type than anything else I've tried.

It's available to anyone who knows anything about how to use
the web to download software, no matter what software and OS
        they're using.

I have hopes that abc2ly will eventually give me access to the good
work you people are doing on lilypond, but at the moment I don't feel
lilypond is suitable for what I'm trying to do as an internet music
publisher. (See http://www.world.std.com/~lconrad/music-publish.html
if you're interested in what that is -- basically providing
Renaissance polyphony in unbarred parts.)
