The naming might suggest that such a thing exists, but it doesn't. The
rest direction is chosen relative to the stem direction of the other
note.  try doing \stemup in the %======== section of the soprano. (I
did add a mental note to add such a property.)

Made added a note to the doco: correct usage is now
Score.barNumberDirection = \down.

Let's hope you learned something, and that you'll have less trouble
with the next score. (Your examples look a little on the complicated
side. I'm interested in the results. Let me know it when I can download them.)
