Could I suggest, Jan, that the clef syntax may be greatly simplified
by using the original purpose of most of them - to mark the tonic
line?

For example, you can find a C clef in Couperin on any line of the
staff, but they are all the same symbol. Same for the early mensural
marks - the staff started with only one line and gradually increased
over the centuries.

So specifying the symbol and the vertical position separately might
be a lot cleaner than the current system.
