A couple of notes regarding the post you linked to. The repository should make not make a distinction between what is and isn't in Solaris. This repository should eventually contain everything this would be useful to install on a OpenSolaris distro. (Including everything that is currently part of "Solaris" and Open Sourced). (We just need to make sure the dependency metadata is accurate.) I understand the work to include all of Open/Solaris is probably best delayed, but we need to include all packages that are external open source packages, which might rely on a mega package ON-bxx. This will open the door for the various opensolaris distributions to share the repository, and allow someone to create their own distro, just by picking a set of packages from the repository. (I would also include source packages for those distros that want to change path info.) As for GNU maintainers making Solaris packages. I think you would be surprises by the willingness of individual maintains that want to see widespread adoption of their packages. (Maybe to Sun this isn't so important, but adding these packages just adds to the completeness of the repository, and those packages will be mroe liekly to be kept up to date.) And yes, I think more fine grained packages are also needed. For example in my VIM proposal, I have laid out the concept of having multiple packages for a single version of VIM: 1) GUI-less vim binaries 2) gvim binaries 3) Individual language support packages, for each language we wish to support. 4) etc. -Brian
