Do you mean *copying* package.tar.gz into /packages should install the
package? or you mean *extracting* the package.tar.gz into /packages?
It could. But the normal practise for now would be to make a link
from /packages into /stow.
/packages is simply a container directory for packages, it could be
anything. /stow is where you either create a symbolic link or copy
the package, to install it.
What I do not yet understand, how do things like automatic updates,
automatic installation of dependencies etc. work in this scheme?
