I should say that I haven't had time to make progress since last
weekend, so I don't want somebody who wants to make progress not to
because they're waiting for me. If you want to do some hacking, let
me know and I'll send you what I've got so far (which is just a test
program, unfortunately) and help you to understand it if you're not
already familiar with Gtk widgets. I'd have submitted it to Linas,
as he asked, except that in its current state it simply renders
GNUcash/Gtk unusable.
