In some cases, this would be fine, but what if the user wants to use
gnucash to store an account with the stock prices from each day and
generate graphs from that?  If they don't run gnucash every day, then
they're sunk.

I consider configuring net connectivity to be SEP (Someone Else's
Problem).  The user would do that elsewhere (diald, ppp with demand
dialing, separate cron script, whatever).
