Hmm I didn't expect that they would.  That's strange.

I know that deleted directories won't get deleted during an update
unless you use the -d flag (i.e. cvs update -Pd), but I didn't think
they would exist in new checkouts.

Did you actually do a "cvs delete" on the directories, or just their
contents?  Also did you "cvs commit" the removal?
