My hope/goal is to keep the build & install process as simple as
reasonably possible.

The goal of all of the packages on the lib directory is that they are
for the short term, to simplify compile & install. This is typically
because they are rare, hard to find, hard to install, or require special
hacks to make them interop correctly.
The long term hope is that thesee packages become better known & more
widely available, e.g. in base debian, redhat, etc. distros.

Fixing the timestamps might solve the current round of build problems.
Long term ... well, the current build process (for everything but g-wrap)
works, and is not obviously overburdened or too complex or too hard to maintain.
So why abandon it?
I'd love to see the g-wrap have some sort of 'make dist' target that
touched the right files for us ... if we had that, I think most of the build problems
would be gone, and the system we have today could last indefinitely ...
