Ok, I implemented the shutdown stuff as I described,
with a few modifications, and I have it basically
working.

Everything works great on both gnome and motif when
you aren't running in shell.

In shell, gnome works just fine. You can load everything
up and launch the gui, edit some stuff, exit the gui
back to the shell, and then launch the gui again with
the old stuff back where you left off. Pretty cool, eh?

In shell with motif, everything works ok, but when you
exit the gui, the main window remains visible but
non-functional. You can relaunch the gui and you get
a new (functional) window, but the old one is still
there. The windows don't go away until you exit the
program. I just don't know enough about X programming
to solve this.

I still need to add the ui-shutdown hooks (the hook
itself is already there, I just need to add the two
functions to be called), and then I will send a patch.
