Thanks everyone for the help.
I finally figured out what the problem was. CVS automatically goes from LF
only at end of line to CR-LF if that is the default for the file system.
Since that is default for Dos/Windows, I got a bunch of extraneous CR's. I
stripped them out and it would configure, but it was a ton of work. I
decided to re-download with the -kb option which inhibits the end-of-line
conversions.
