(Aside: Linas, have you gotten my past couple of direct messages? No
big deal if you're just busy, but I just wanted to make sure that
some overeager spam filter wasn't eating them, and have you end up
thinking I was ignoring you.)
Today I caught up on all my financial mess, and I decided to see if I
could fully switch over to the GNOME version for my day-to-day stuff.
I'm happy to say that this expiriment was a complete success. If
anything, the GNOME version is now *more* stable than the Lesstif
version.
There were several minor issues, but overall, things went
substantially better than I expected. One minor improvement is that I
particularly like the fact that I can totally ignore the combobox and
just type the transfer name I want from the keyboard. The only thing
that would be better would be incremental completion. FWIW, I'm using
current CVS+Dave's latest patch+my FileIO patch.
Here are my observations. I may try to deal with some of these issues
sometime soon, but I figured someone else might also have an urge to
tackle them.
Bugs:
* Clicking in the transfer field doesn't do anything if the
transaction isn't already selected. You have to click on the
description first, then the transfer. I think one of the other
fields has this same problem (though perhaps only in multi-line
mode).
* There's an old problem with description quickfill. If you type a
name, and it quickfills, then you try to type something else,
you'll lose the first character you typed. It vanishes. For
example, if you were trying to type Taxi, and after the T it
filled Triumverate, then when you type the "a", you'd be left with
an "aTriumverate", when you should have had "TaTriumverate".
Actually, to fix this right, quickfill should also notice that
you've ignored its suggestion and delete it.
* Changing from single-line to multi-line mode in the middle of
creating a transaction eats the transaction you were working on.
Wishlist items:
* What about switching the order of the "Transfer from" and
Description fields? Aside from being more intuitive to me, it'll
be important if we ever want to move to a more sophisticated
"autofill" system where choosing the description would
(optionally) pick recent values for all the other categories.
* It would be nice if at least the keypad enter key, and probably
the return key as well was equivalent to "Record" in the register.
Is there any reason we shouldn't arrange that?
