Jim's question raises an issue that was mentioned in the architecture docs:
Is it possible to export an entire GNUCash "database" to a text file (not
necessarily in QIF format). If so the textfile could be edited with
Perl/emacs/whatever and re-imported to solve problems of this type. Is
this possible?
Please forgive if this was answered in the archives (I'm currently in the
process of migrating from Windows to a real OS).
----------Jim Shepard's original question follows-------------------
I am trying to re-parent an account with a "Liability" type to a parent
with an "Expense" type. In the process I would like for the type of the
subaccount to change to its new parent's type. In detail, I originally
setup my accounts quite some time ago with the following general
structure:
Assets
- Checking Account
- Investment Account
- ...
Liabilities
- Credit Cards
- Taxes
- Federal Income Tax
- Social Security
- ...
- Mortgage
- Principle
- Interest
- Escrow
Income
- Employer
- Dividends
- Interest
- ...
Expenses
- Utilities
- Auto
- ...
It now seems that I should have placed the "Taxes" accounts that are
currently under the "Liabilities" parent under the "Expenses". The same
should be true for the "Interest" account.
If I try to edit one of these accounts, I can not reparent it to the
"Expenses" parent since the type seems to be fixed. Is there a work
around or a possible enhancement for this capability? I've checked the
archives, but was not able to find this particular issue addressed.
