I'm currently using (for those of you with a recent version of GNOME)

/usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-money.png

which is just a wad of bills. However, I like your wife's idea.

Perhaps a picture of a gnu on a 'one gnu' bill could be used instead?
That
wouldn't be Linux specific. But then again, that could end up looking
like
the icon they use for emacs.
