What does your register display for the stock account look like?  If
the account is of type "stock" or "mutual", you should have a "Bought"
and a "Sold" column in the register.  If you enter a number in the
Bought column it's a buy, in the "Sold" column it's a sell.

If your register display doesn't show both columns, what version of
gnucash are you using?
