Yes, you can use perl to interface with gnucash files directly.
Check out the gnc-prices program that comes with the gnucash
distribution. That is a perl script that manipulates the
gnucash database directly using the C api, suitably wrapped
for perl. That should get you started, but please feel free
to ask on this list for more help.
