Note that there's also the _other_ option; exporting the engine API
via CORBA.
CORBA can come "virtually for free" as we've got enough dependancies
on other bits of GNOME that it may be virtually _assumed_ that we've
got ORBit around to provide a CORBA implementation.

This sounds to me like the sort of thing that would be valuable to add
as CORBA API stuff...
I've done some CORBA scripting using Python, which has turned out quite
well; I gather than it's not too bad to do in Perl, either.
