It really is a bug, though one that I think has been corrected.
At least, I cannot duplicate it and I'm sure we would be seeing
more bug reports if it was in the current stable version.
GnuCash does not save old and new versions of a transaction in the
database, so this is really a GUI bug.

If you want to live really dangerously, you could always use CVS and
have the most up to date version. If you want to stick with numbered
releases, I plan on releasing 1.5.0 shortly after I release 1.4.2
sometime this weekend.
