Lee,
All I can suggest is that you persevere. There are a large number of
dependencies, but once you have them all, things seem to be fairly
unchanging (not that I can speak for the developers). It is worth it to
play with the new stuff. If you have questions, you can look back
through the list archives for the gnucash-devel list, or ask on the list
for help.
I assume you are aware that 1.5.3 is a development version, and while
it seems to be quite robust, is prone to breakage. 1.4.10 is the latest
stable version.
