Well, the problem is "almost" resolved. There's code in cvs head that eliminates the high overhead in all situations but the very first register open. This code needs to be tested a bit more, and then back-ported to gnucash-1.8. Next, we'd need a new relese, a 1.8.10 and then you'd have to wait for your distro to build a binary package for 1.8.10 ...
