OK, that's removed (meant to remove that anyway in due course) but I still
can't build.

I get dozens of automake errors now:
automake: src/gnome/Makefile.am: not supported: source file
`${top_srcdir}/src/backend/file/gnc-recurrence-xml-v2.c' is in subdirectory
repeated about 70 times for different files.

Then I get:
src/gnome/schemas/Makefile.am:2: invalid variable `dist_schema_DATA'
src/gnome-utils/Makefile.am:223: variable `DB_LIBS' not defined
src/gnome-utils/Makefile.am:223: variable `DB_LIBS' not defined
src/gnome-utils/schemas/Makefile.am:2: invalid variable `dist_schema_DATA'
src/import-export/schemas/Makefile.am:2: invalid variable `dist_schema_DATA'
src/import-export/log-replay/Makefile.am:38: invalid variable `dist_ui_DATA'
src/import-export/hbci/Makefile.am:82: variable `gncscm_DATA' not defined
src/import-export/hbci/schemas/Makefile.am:2: invalid variable
`dist_schema_DATA'
src/report/stylesheets/Makefile.am:46: invalid variable `dist_ui_DATA'
src/business/business-gnome/schemas/Makefile.am:2: invalid variable
`dist_schema_DATA'

And that's it.

No ./configure is created. Nothing.

All I've got that's ANY different to the original pristine tree is a few
symlinks to ltmain.sh, config.guess, config.sub, mkinstalldirs etc.

When? Which list? I didn't see anything on this.

Shouldn't README.svn have been updated?
" Autogen will automatically generate the configure script and then
run it WITH SPECIAL ARGUMENTS to make sure certain files get built."
