FTR, when I want to test dist/distcheck I make a duplicate of my
source tree:

mkdir disttest
(cd src ; tar cf - . ) | (cd disttest ; tar xf - )

Then I do the testing in "disttest"

This way it doesn't disturb my "pristine" source tree.   YMMV.
